This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, but it is a sad day none the less. Google, as reported, has stopped showing emoji in search results. For those of you unfamiliar with the phenomenon, Google has been showing emoji in their mobile results for several years now and just recently started supporting them on desktop.
It seems as though the lifespan of emoji characters is short however, as Google announced in early May that they would stop including the characters in search results, only shortly after beginning to support them.
Just this past weekend, Google was true to their word and emoji laden results pages were no more. Jennifer Slegg first reported the unfortunate find on Monday morning, noting that fellow search engine Bing still supported emoji characters – for the time being.
With larger companies starting to cleverly incorporate emoji characters into their results listing, it seems as if Google is taking the fun out of search.
While many digital marketing gurus knew this was coming, it still manages to hurt a little. We’ll miss those little guys when searching the web, but we can imagine they are in emoji heaven somewhere, smiling down on us.
